South Wasco County Middle School Volunteer Work
South Wasco County Middle School students and staff have been busy volunteering in our community and planning exciting events for the spring, and there's only more to come!
The SWCMS Student Council chose to put a large portion of their time and funds into community service projects this year. One such project was fulfilling many of the Secret Santa tickets for Canyon Rim Senior Living, while another is currently underway as they plan events for the elementary school students to participate in this spring. In addition to these benevolent undertakings, the Student Council also took time to organize a community trash cleanup on March 3.
Students cleaning up the hills and fields around the city of Maupin.
Following the city’s cleanup of the Donkey Trail and Skate Park areas, middle school students from each class chose an additional area in Maupin to focus on: 6th graders cleaned up main street and the surrounding roads, 7th graders tended to Redsides hill, the bridge area, the riverbanks in lower Maupin, and the road leading up to the school, and 8th graders concentrated on the school grounds and areas surrounding the track and shop building. All together, the students tidied a great deal of land both around their school and for the rest of the city. Megan Henson, middle school teacher and head of the Student Council, said they were able to fill almost an entire dump trailer at the end of the cleanup, an impressive feat for a group to accomplish in just one event.
