Community Survey, What's it all about?

A little background info…  SWA, along with the South Wasco Health Collaborative partners, applied for and have been awarded a grant from the Columbia Gorge Health Council to seek community feedback on areas that contribute to our overall health and welfare.  To do this, we are partnering with other South Wasco non-profit organizations.

Over the next few months these partner organizations will be hosting a variety of events, paid for by the grant, where you have a chance to provide your feedback on the status and importance of issues, including housing, transportation, childcare, employment, youth development, senior care, community belonging or connection to one another, access to health treatment and food. Providing your point of view, can help us not only focus on areas that are the most important, but also give funders insight into what we as a community value.  This is an indicator of how successful our combined efforts and investments could be.  The final survey results will be shared with all residents and can be used by South Wasco non-profits to plan and apply for future grants.

These events are a great way to get out and visit with friends and family while doing some good for the community. Each South Wasco resident 18 years or older that takes the survey will receive a $10 gift certificate to use at a local business. The host organization also will get a matching donation for each survey filled out at the event.  You will only be able to take the survey once. However, the events will have a little something tasty being served. You are welcome to come to each event and grab a bite to eat even if you have already taken the survey.

The events:

This spring the Wamic Rural Fire Protection District and the Barlow Gate Grange partnered to host a Wildfire and Forest Restoration meeting.  Attendees enjoyed lunch and learned about wildfire risk reduction, forest restoration and defensible space from a variety of state and national agency representatives.

Later in April, the South Wasco County School District hosted the Redsides Powwow.  The Powwow included a community dinner followed by social dancing and games featuring the host drum – Black Lodge Singers.

Coming up on July 29th, don’t miss out on BBQ at the South Wasco Farmers Market hosted by the Tygh School Community Center and Tygh Valley Rural Fire Protection District. The Oregon State Fire Marshal will be presenting information on fire preparedness. This is a great chance to learn about resources and get tips on protecting your home.

On Saturday August 5th, as part of Shaniko Days, the survey will be available during the FREE Chili Feed from noon – 1pm.  Additional events also are in the works for Dufur, Simnasho, and Pine Grove, so stay tuned to our events calendar and Facebook page for specifics to come.
